LED lighting is available in many familiar and unique configurations. These new configurations let us design lighting applications in ways that we could not do before the introduction of the LED technology.

Kichler Lighting is leading the industry when illuminating a variety of spaces using its LED Tape Lighting and channel systems.

Kichler focuses on layering light as both a functional and decorative option for homeowners that want to light up their homes. LED lighting has blazed the trail leading to new opportunities for the use of LED illumination in otherwise dark areas. LED light sources are capable of fitting in a variety of locations and with their low energy consumption, LEDs are very inexpensive to operate.

The goal of every great lighting designer is to have a layered lighting application. This layout uses multiple light sources to create various “scenes” in the room. This dictates the feeling of the space based on the various types and levels of illumination.

Looking deeper into layered lighting. A textbook lighting design springboards off of a central ceiling fixture. This is done by adding multiple layers of light, at various locations to provide a fully illuminated space without glare or dark spots.

LED Light Layering Starts This Way:

  1. First is the ambient or fill lighting which anchors the room.
  2. Accent lighting that illuminates architectural features in the room or accent pieces that reinforce the design intent of the room.
  3. Task lighting is made up of specific types of luminaires that provide a direct light where any and all tasks get accomplished. Think cooking, homework and reading.
  4. Decorative Lighting rounds off the layers and these are the standout lights that make the dominant design statement.

Estrin Zirkman recommends a mix of ambient or fill lighting lighting such as track or ceiling fan with a decorative or built-in light kit. This lighting characteristic can including pendants or decorative wall sconces also. Then there is task lighting, this is a very important consideration when a client is thinking of aging in place, LED tape light and extruded channels used under cabinets to provide a well lit work area to running the LED tape around mirrors or in toe kicks for late night time navigation.

Flexibility in use and application are the leading features that have propelled LED tape lighting to the forefront of interior design. This tool can provide strategically placed brilliance without seeing the light fixtures which can distract from the design intent. In the correct setting using LED tape and channel can make any space appear larger, Adjust the color temperature and now you can light a cozy nook or add the appropriate dimmer and control the mood of the room. LED tape can also be functional light closets, cabinets and just about anywhere it can be attached to improve the visibility.

LED Tape and Channel Installation That Is Simple!

The first step in every successful LED tape and channel design is planning. Because tape and channel lighting is hardwired into your electrical system, planning is a critical component of the installation being done and to make sure the proper items are purchased. The rule of thumb is to map out the design first.

  • LED tape is powered by a low voltage system and requires the correct power supply or driver to make it operate. There may be a plug in driver option also.
  • Measure all linear runs of tape for every place tape will be used. The total length of tape will determine the wattage capacity of the power supply.
  • Time to energize? Not yet. What type of switching options will be needed? Will a standard wall switch that just turns the lights on and off be what is needed or will the design call for various light output and require a dimmer?  The key to remember is any switch can turn an LED system on or off, but dimmers must be matched to the product. While there are a wide variety of components from many manufacturers please check to assure the selected dimmer will work with the system installed.
